What it does for you

Save hundreds on HST when you transfer ownership.

At Service Ontario you pay tax on the wholesale book value printed on the UVIP, not on what the car is actually worth. A certified appraisal lets you pay on the actual market value. Vehicles over 20 years old need one regardless, because no book value exists.

  • Reduce HST costs when transferring ownership with MTO
  • Save on import/export expenses
  • Support legal matters like divorce, bankruptcy and estate settlements
  • Maximize insurance claims. Don't settle for low payouts
  • Protect your classic or antique vehicle's value

Already paid the tax? You may be eligible for a refund within 60 days.

What is an appraisal letter?

An appraisal letter is an official document that gives an up-to-date evaluation of a vehicle based on its current state, including its mechanical condition, body, interior, odometer reading (km), and history, such as accidents, commercial or rental use, and whether it was registered out of province or country.

How does it work?

Save hundreds on HST when transferring vehicle ownership at Service Ontario by paying tax on the actual market value rather than the wholesale/book value listed on the UVIP. If a vehicle has high mileage, excessive wear, severe damage (mechanical, body, or interior), or a history of accidents, rental, or out-of-province use, its appraised value may be lower. For vehicles over 20 years old, Service Ontario requires an appraisal letter since their market or wholesale value isn't listed. Already paid the tax? You may be eligible for a refund within 60 days. Contact us to learn more.

What can I use it for?

An appraisal letter can help you reduce HST costs during ownership transfers with MTO, save on import/export expenses, support legal matters like divorce, bankruptcy, and estate settlements, and maximize insurance claims for better payouts. It also protects the value of classic or antique vehicles. Appraisals are available for various vehicles, including cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles, and more, and can be used for transferring ownership, securing loans, obtaining bank loan approval, or resolving legal disputes.

How do I know this will work?

Certified appraisal letters are approved and accepted by many different organizations, including Service Ontario, insurance companies, banks and law firms. To date, the only letters we've seen questioned had a clerical error or were incomplete. In rare cases like that, contact us and we will email or text you a corrected letter and supporting documents to solve the problem.

Will it affect my insurance?

No, an appraisal letter for Service Ontario is not reported elsewhere. For instance, if your car is totaled in an accident, your insurance company will compensate you based on its actual market value. However, if you obtain an appraisal letter specifically for insurance purposes to secure full coverage, the insurer will pay the appraised value in the event of a total loss.
